Narumi post town
eating grilled eel with my son
during his homecoming visit

正座して経読む少女盆の月
kneeling formally
a girl reads a sutra
the Bon Festival moon

父の碑に真水供ふる敗戦日
offering up fresh water
before my father’s grave
the anniversary of the defeat

塩田へきちきちばつた飛び込めり
suddenly
a grasshopper flies
into the salt farm


2009年 7月号

寡婦たりし母が好みし額の花
living as a widow
my mother loves
hydrangea flowers

牛呻く涎を灼くる地に垂らし
giving a groan
a bull slavers
on the sunbaked ground

脱稿の眼鏡を拭けり明け易し
completing an article
I wipe my glasses
short night

淡々と虐殺語り蚊を打てり
he speaks without attachment
of the massacre
slapping a mosquito


2009年 6月号

青白き梅雨満月や母逝けり
the pale full moon
in the rainy season
my mother passes away

夏菊や死出の口紅薄くひく
summer chrysanthemum
painting my mother’s lips
she departs this world

通夜の灯に迷ひ込みたり金亀子
a June bug suddenly flies
around the light
the wake

子が蟻の列見つめをり葬の朝
our child is watching
the column of ants
the morning of the funeral


2009年 5月号

みちのくの雨にけぶれり花りんご
apple blossoms
are dimly visible in the rain
of the deep north

昆布干す最果ての地に太宰の碑
drying kombu in the sun
a monument to Osamu Dazai
in the farthest place

初夏の日や鈍色の護衛艦
an early summer sun
a dark gray
convoy ship

霊山に緑衣の仁王夏に入る
in the holy mountains
the Deva kings in green
summer has come


2009年 4月号


桃咲くと母に告げゐし夢の中
telling my mother
that the peaches are in bloom
in my dream

花冷えや剣道場の床の艶
chill on the cherry blossoms
the shiny floors
of the kendo school

花筏城をめぐりて流れけり
cherry blossom petals
are floating down the stream

around the castle

伊吹見ゆ水の都の桜どき
Mt.Ibuki is visible
the cherry blossom season
in the city on the water


2009年 3月号

強東風に甘蔗ざわめけり激戦地
strong east wind
rustling through the sugar cane

the site of the fierce battle

春愁やガラスケースに手榴弾
melancholy of spring
a hand grenade
in the glass case

辺戸の春また来ましたと句碑撫づる
Hedo Point in spring
“I’ve come back,” I said
gently patting the haiku stone

春の星仰ぐ珊瑚の浜に出て
I look up at the spring stars
coming down
to the coral beach


2009年 2月号

霊場の雪かきわけて瀧を見に
forcing my way through the snow
of the sacred place
to see the waterfall

大雪にはばまれ滝に近寄れず
heavy snowfall prevents me
from approaching
the waterfall

絶壁に青く透きたる滝氷柱
the falls have turned
into the blue, crystal icicles
on the sheer cliff

瀧凍てて全山音を失へり
the falls frozen
the whole mountain
has lost its sound


2009年 1月号


大いなる鯛釣り上げし初の夢
catching a big sea bream
in my first dream
of the New Year

墨磨つて三日の雪に籠りけり
staying indoors
I rub down an ink stick

the snowy third day of the year

机上の書積み替へ仕事始めかな
piling up books
on the desk again

the first work of the year

富士見ゆる窓辺に置けり冬帽子
putting my winter hat
by the window
from which Mt. Fuji is visible


2008年 12月号

師を見舞ひ新宿で見る冬の星
visiting my teacher in hospital
I see a winter star

in Shinjuku

髭を剃る鏡くもれり漱石忌
I’m shaving myself,
the mirror has fogged up

Soseki’s day

母見舞ふ川を隔てし冬の虹
visiting my sick mother
over the river
a winter rainbow


玄関に冬日あつめて靴磨く
letting plenty of winter sunlight
into the entrance hall
I polish my shoes


2008年 11月号

寺抜けてミサへ露けき坂上る
passing through the temple
going up the dewy hill
to hear mass

露けしや煤けて小さき納戸神
humidity
the smutty and small
god in Nando-room

茶の花に届きてゐたり窯の影
the shadow of a kiln
has reached

the tea blossoms

蓮堀夫一日つひに火を焚かず
the man digging lotus
never made a bonfire
all day long

鵙の贄佐渡金山の登り口
a shrike’s sacrificial victim
the starting point for the ascent
of the Sado Gold Mine

暗がりに子規の小机萩咲けり
in the dark place
Shiki’s small desk

bush clover in bloom

啄木の間借りの二階秋ともす
the room upstairs
Takuboku had rented

autumn light

秋風や石あればみな風化仏
autumn wind
every stone around here
is the weathered Buddhist image


2008年 9月号

大いなる天壇の空小鳥来る
the wide open sky
above the Temple of Heaven
little birds come

北京秋天樹下散髪の椅子一つ

the autumn sky in Beijing
under the tree
a chair for a haircut

林則徐の像かすめ飛ぶ秋燕
by the statue of Lin Zexu
flies low
an autumn swallow

大糸瓜垂る中庭に石の臼
in the courtyard
where large luffas hang down

a stone hand mill


2008年 8月号

母と来て炎天の墓ひた濡らす
under a blazing sun
my mother and I pour water
onto the tomb

子と飾る七夕妻に姉妹なし
my wife decorating
a tanabata tree with our children
is an only child


篝灼けせし鵜匠の素顔よし
lit by the cormorant fishing fire
the face of the master
looks good

鵜篝の靡くを祖なる火と思ふ
looking at the flaring fire
in front of the cormorant boat
as the primitive fire



2008年  7月号

母の手を引き炎天に立ちどまる
leading my mother by the hand
and stopping
under a burning sky

炎天に引きし母の手もうあらず
My mother, whom I once led

by the hand under a burning sky,

passed away

白髪の母似と言はれ星涼し
They say I have the same white hair

as my mother
stars feeling cool

月下美人咲けり幼き嫁迎へ
a Dutchman’s pipe cactus blooms
we welcome our very young
daughter-in-law



2008年  6月号

迷路なす地下墓地を出て麦の秋

getting out
of a maze-like catacomb

the time of barley harvest

仔牛ほどの犬待ちゐたり登山駅
a dog about the size of a calf
is waiting for someone

the station of the cable railway

大沼に雉子の鋭声やかきつばた
a sharp cry of the pheasant
across the big swamp

rabit-ear irises

母の文途絶えて久し白菖蒲
I have not heard
from my mother for a long time

white Japanese irises

巣立鳥見に妻と娘を誘ひ出す
calling and taking
my wife and daughter for seeing
the birds leaving the nest

青芝にペルリ提督上陸碑
on the green grass
Monument commemorating
the landing of Commodore Perry

葉桜や火の神祀る郭跡
cherry trees in leaf
the former licensed quarter
sacred to God of Fire

辺戸岬おどろおどろと春の雷
Cape Hedo
the rumbles
of spring thunder


2008年  4月号

深谿を背に花冷の能舞台
a deep gorge
at the back of the Noh stage
chill on the cherry blossoms

ふだん着で富士と向へり花の冷
I stand facing  Mt. Fuji
in everyday clothes
chill on the cherry blossoms

花冷の書庫へ螺旋の階下る
April chill
going down the spiral staircase
into the stack room

花の昼眠るごとくに父逝けり
blossoms at midday
my father passed away
quietly


2008年  3月号

看護婦が叱られてゐる春の宵
I hear someone
scolding a nurse
spring evening

春暁や二夜つづきし母の夢
 
spring dawn
seeing my mother in my dream
on two consecutive nights

空つぽの書棚に春日退職す
on the empty bookselves
spring sunshine
retiring

草萌ゆる予科練生の夢見し地
sprouting grasses
Yokaren-trained pilots
had brief dreams here


2008年  2月号

紙を干す雪に行き来の影落とし
drying the paper
casting the shadows
of coming and going on the snow

手で払ふ大白鳥の句碑の雪
sweeping the snow by hand
from the haiku stone
of the whooperswan

父の顔いつか師となる冬の夢
my father’ s face
has become my teacher’s
in my winter deam

春近き研究室を明け渡す
spring is near
moving out of the room
at the university


2008年  1月号

地底より太鼓の響き年立てり
the sound of a Japanese drum
from deep under the ground
the new year comes around

赤ん坊に星またたける二日かな
stars are twinkling
at our baby
the second day of the year

年玉を母より貰ふ夢の中
getting a New Year present
from my mother
in my dream

着膨れて乗るふるさとの渡し舟
bundled up in thick winter clothing
I take a ferryboat
of my hometown
